Sauganash Prairie Grove is a mix of wet savanna, degraded marsh, and mature floodplain woods on both sides of the Chicago River. This uncommon woodland community is dominated by swamp white oaks. Plants such as swamp saxifrage, blue flag iris, and bluejoint grass are indicators the wetness of this site. In the more mesic woodland along the river bluff, one finds plants with such picturesqe names as zig-zag goldenrod, wild geranium, wood reed, bottlebrush grass and golden alexanders.
Directions: Meet at the Forest Preserve parking lot at the Irene Hernandez Picnic Area off Foster Avenue across from Kilbourne Avenue. We will walk north along the railroad tracks and cross the river on the bridge.

At nearby Indian Road Woods visitors can stroll through a grove of stately old bur oaks on a bluff above the river. In springtime, a large population of the rare wild hyacinth provides a delightful display.
Directions: Enter the Forest Preserve drive that lies just north of Indian Road, on the east side of Central Avenue. Follow the drive all the way to the end, to the parking lot.
